In our blog, we’ve repeatedly emphasized eating healthy. It’s something we believe in for so many reasons. We’re also human, and that means having a soft spot for things that taste incredible. Often, the words, "healthy" and "great tasting" aren’t used in the same sentence, but we believe it’s more than possible. Wonderful fresh fruit and veggies, seafood and more are perfect examples.
Every now and Zen we come across something with such an amazing taste that it should be banned. Well, sort of. Such is the case of a treat we found at the Hanalei Farmers Market on Kauai from the Heart Flame Bakery, a very health conscious and outstanding little business on the island. We sampled their breads, pizzas and other absolutely delicious and very healthy baked goods, and were simply blown away. How could organic, gluten-free and vegan products be so healthy and taste so damned good?
What put us over the top is what we shall hereinafter reference as People’s Exhibit “A”: The Heart Flame Bakery Almond Sesame Crunch Bar. It’s as close to a culinary version of crack as we have ever found. To quote actor Tony Shalhoub in the must-see movie “The Big Night”, “It tastes so good, you want to kill yourself!” Here’s a list of the bar’s addictive, mouth-watering ingredients:
Organic Sesame Seeds
Organic Sunflower Seeds
Roasted Almond Butter
Agave Nectar
Cashews
Organic Coconut
Kauai Vanilla Bean
Sea Salt
That’s just wrong! Let’s put it this way: when I tried a bite, I felt like Snuffles, the dog on the Quickdraw McGraw cartoon show who basically had an orgasm after receiving a dog biscuit, and, well, you get the idea. Healthy and outrageously good. Caloric? Absolutely. But if you are going on a rugged Kauai hike, a calorie-burning mountain bike ride or are trying to recover from a day of surfing or a dive in Kauai’s waters, this might just be the ticket.
Alas, Heart Flame Bakery only sell their products locally on the island of Kauai at the moment, at local health food stores and farmer’s markets (although they do ship to the outer islands and the mainland). We think this alone justifies the trip to Kauai, as if you didn’t need another excuse. One of the things that makes Kauai special is that it’s a place not of mega corporations, but wonderful small businesses offering products and services well worth your time. If you visit Kauai, make sure to look for Heart Flame Bakery and other local products. Can’t get to Kauai but want to enjoy Kauai's wonderful foods and products at home? Contact Aaron Martin of ActivityKauai.com, who can package and send Kauai grown and made local products back to you.
Trust us when we say you will never taste anything so good.
